The most immediate example that comes to mind is a recent Roblox experience featuring Imagine Dragons, a game rated for all ages but featuring elements like bombs, rocket launchers/ flamethrowers, and swords, and of course the option to "blow up" a Green Room. While the creators likely had no malicious intent, this reminds us that we should be more mindful when designing experiences meant for all ages. Did we already forget about the Las Vegas Shooting? Although these elements may seem trivial to an adult, they contribute to children's online landscape, often without an ethical or educational guide.
This brings me to my core proposition—a more intentional approach that involves developing what I'm terming "conscious AI companions" for our youngest users. Picture a digital counterpart to Pinocchio's cricket, if you will. These AI companions would be designed to offer real-time, age-appropriate advice and would function within ethical frameworks, including guidelines from respected organizations like Common Sense Education. Advanced Natural Language Processing algorithms, tailored for younger audiences, would make the helpful guidance but also engaging and understandable.
And before you think this sounds too intrusive, let me assure you that privacy is paramount. Data privacy is non-negotiable, especially when it comes to children. My vision for these AI companions includes stringent data collection protocols compliant with laws like the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and GDPR. There will be complete transparency with users and their guardians about the type of data collected and its usage. After all, trust is a cornerstone in making this work. What truly sets these AI companions apart is their ability to learn and adapt.
